The water is warm most of the year, flights from the US East Coast are short, and the diving industry is mature. It is not a budget destination, but for big-animal encounters within two hours of Florida, nothing else compares.

Tiger Beach and Grand Bahama form the marquee region: liveaboards and day boats work the shallow banks west of Grand Bahama for tiger and lemon sharks, with reef and wreck diving off Freeport. Nassau and New Providence offer the classic Bahamas mix, Caribbean reef shark dives on the southwest side, the Tongue of the Ocean wall, and movie wrecks in the shallows. The Out Islands beyond the registry's scope add walls and blue holes for those with more time.
