Plongée en British Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands are a sailing nation first, and their diving carries that flavor: short boat rides between 60-odd islands and cays, moorings on every site, and calm channels sheltered by the archipelago itself. The centerpiece is the RMS Rhone, a Royal Mail steamer wrecked by a hurricane in 1867 and now a national park, her bow section intact enough to swim through and her stern scattered in shallow water where the propeller still stands. Around it spread granite boulder formations, coral canyons, and easygoing reef sites where turtles and tarpon are routine. Nothing here is extreme; the appeal is comfort, clarity, and history. Many divers combine the BVI with a charter yacht and rendezvous-dive with operators who pick them up off their own transom.

The British Virgin Islands function as one destination: sites cluster around Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Cooper, Salt, and Norman Islands, nearly all inside a mooring system that spares the reef from anchors. The Rhone off Salt Island anchors the wreck diving, the granite formations that build The Baths at Virgin Gorda continue underwater, and the channels of the Sir Francis Drake passage keep conditions gentle.

Expériences emblématiques: Two-part dives on the RMS Rhone, from the swim-through bow to the shallow stern and propeller; boulder mazes and grottoes off Virgin Gorda; relaxed reef dives with turtles at Cooper Island; rendezvous diving straight off a chartered sailboat; snorkeling the caves at Norman Island.

Saisons: December through May brings dry, settled trade-wind weather and the busiest charter season. Summer remains divable with warmer water, but hurricane risk builds from June through November, and some operations pause in the early-autumn peak.

Comment s'y rendre: Most visitors fly to Beef Island, Tortola (EIS) via San Juan, Antigua, or St. Maarten, or take the ferry from St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands after flying there. Inter-island ferries and charter boats handle the rest; many divers simply live aboard a sailboat for the week.

Entrée & visas: US, Canadian, UK, EU, and many other nationalities generally enter visa-free for short tourist stays in this British Overseas Territory. Verify current requirements and any arrival taxes before travel.

Le coût de la plongée: Expect roughly USD 130-170 for a two-tank boat trip, with rendezvous pickups from charter yachts commonly costing a little more; marine park fees are charged per diver.

Langue: English is the official language.

Pourboires: Tipping follows US habits: 15 percent or so in restaurants unless service is included, and a customary tip for dive crews and charter staff at the end of the trip.

Sécurité en voyage: The BVI are quiet and low-crime by regional standards; petty theft from unattended boats and beaches is the main nuisance. Hurricane season is the structural risk, as Irma demonstrated in 2017, so late-summer travelers should buy flexible tickets. Currents are mild, but the Rhone's depth and swim-throughs deserve a listen at the briefing.

Couverture caisson hyperbare: There is no recompression chamber in the territory; dive emergencies are typically stabilized locally and evacuated to facilities in the US Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico. Availability changes; coordinate through your operator, EMS, and DAN.
