Tauchen in Grenada

Grenada markets itself as the wreck-diving capital of the Caribbean, and its claim rests on a single giant: the Bianca C, a 180-meter Italian cruise liner that burned and sank in 1961 and now lies in about 50 meters off the southwest coast, her scale still legible from the swim along her decks. Around the flagship, the island has assembled a dense collection of smaller wrecks, tugboats, freighters, and a sculpture park whose figures have grown coral skins, spread across reefs swept by gentle to sporty currents. The southern position, at the bottom edge of the hurricane belt, means fewer storm losses, and the island above water trades on nutmeg, rainforest, and a low-rise, unhurried tourism scene. Advanced divers get the liner; everyone else gets an unusually varied Caribbean week.

Grenada is one registry destination with its diving concentrated along the southwest between St. George's and Point Salines: the Bianca C and its escort of smaller wrecks, the Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park's coral-crusted figures, and reef sites like Flamingo Bay. Across the channel, sister island Carriacou offers quieter reefs and its own small wrecks for those who make the hop.

Besondere Erlebnisse: Descending onto the Bianca C's vast deck and pool; the silent congregation of the Molinere sculpture park; drift dives past barrel sponges on Shark Reef; tug and freighter wrecks in recreational depths; rum-and-nutmeg island evenings after two-tank mornings.

Saisons: December through May is the dry, settled season with the most dependable conditions. June through November is wetter with hurricane risk; Grenada sits at the belt's southern edge and is struck less often than islands north of it, though Beryl's 2024 damage to Carriacou showed the exception. The Bianca C is dived when current and visibility allow, any month.

Anreise: Maurice Bishop International (GND) receives direct flights from US and Canadian hubs, London, and regional connections. Most dive operators sit along Grand Anse and the southwest coast, ten to twenty minutes from the airport; Carriacou is a short flight or ferry away.

Einreise & Visa: Many nationalities, including US, Canadian, UK, and EU citizens, typically enter visa-free for short tourist stays. Verify current requirements before travel.

Was Tauchen kostet: Two-tank boat dives generally run about USD 100-140, with Bianca C trips restricted to advanced divers and sometimes priced slightly higher; multi-day packages bring rates down.

Sprache: English is the official language.

Trinkgeld: Around 10 percent is customary where service is not already added; dive crews appreciate an end-of-stay tip.

Reisesicherheit: Grenada is one of the safer islands in the region, with low-key crime limited mostly to opportunistic theft. Hurricane season deserves flexible planning, especially for Carriacou. The Bianca C is a deep, current-exposed dive with a hard floor beyond recreational limits; operators require advanced certification and run it as a tight multilevel profile; honor that.

Dekompressionskammer in der Nähe: A hyperbaric chamber has operated at the hospital in St. George's, and regional evacuation remains the backup for serious cases. Availability changes; confirm the current picture with your operator and route emergencies through EMS and DAN.
