Duiken in Iceland

Iceland offers one dive experienced almost nowhere else: swimming between continents. Silfra, a fissure in Þingvellir National Park where the North American and Eurasian plates pull apart, fills with glacial meltwater filtered through lava rock for decades before it seeps in at 2-4 °C, so clear that visibility is measured in the length of the fissure rather than meters. Divers in drysuits drift its cathedral-blue corridors over cobalt cracks dropping away below. Around that headline, Iceland's cold Atlantic adds geothermal chimneys at Strýtan in the north, where warm mineral water vents into the sea, kelp walls, and wreck and fjord sites for the committed. This is expedition-flavored day diving: short seasons of comfort, mandatory drysuit credentials for Silfra, and scenery topside that competes with the diving.

Silfra and Iceland is the registry destination: the fissure itself sits under an hour from Reykjavík and is dived year-round under national park rules, with drysuit certification or documented experience required. Beyond it, operators run the geothermal cones of Strýtan out of Akureyri in the north, lake and fissure alternatives like Davíðsgjá, and coastal sites when the Atlantic cooperates.

Seizoenen: Silfra's water holds 2-4 °C every month, so the season is about surface comfort and daylight: June through September brings long days and easier logistics, while winter dives happen in snow and near-darkness, beautiful and demanding. Ocean and northern sites are largely a summer affair.

Hoe kom je er: Fly into Keflavík (KEF) from Europe or North America; Silfra is roughly an hour's drive from Reykjavík in Þingvellir National Park, where operators meet divers at the site car park. Strýtan requires getting to Akureyri in the north by domestic flight or a day's drive.

Instap & visa: Iceland is in the Schengen area: EU/EEA citizens enter freely and many other nationalities, including US, UK, and Canadian travelers, get visa-free short stays under Schengen rules. Verify current requirements before travel.

Wat duiken kost: Guided two-dive Silfra trips with drysuit and transport typically run about USD 250-350; ocean and Strýtan trips price similarly once travel north is included. Iceland's general travel costs are high.

Taal: Icelandic is the national language; English is spoken essentially everywhere, and all dive operations run in it.

Fooi: There is no tipping culture in Iceland; service charges are included and no one expects more, though guides accept thanks, and the occasional tip, graciously.

Reisveiligheid: Iceland is exceptionally safe socially; the environment is the hazard. Weather changes fast enough to close roads in any season, winter driving is genuinely difficult, and volcanic activity on the Reykjanes peninsula occasionally reroutes travel without affecting Þingvellir. In the water, cold is the constant: drysuit requirements at Silfra exist because 2 °C punishes error, and hands and lips go numb even when everything goes right.
