Far to the north, the Musandam Peninsula's mountainous inlets offer drift dives where nutrient-loaded currents pull in schooling fish and the occasional big visitor. Two registry destinations anchor the country. The Daymaniyat Islands, reached by boat from the Muscat area, are the marquee marine reserve: coral gardens, turtle nesting islets, and seasonal whale sharks. The Musandam Peninsula, an exclave beyond the UAE, serves up current-swept points and khor (fjord) diving from Khasab and liveaboards; it feels wilder and rougher-edged than the capital's day-boat scene.
