Diving in Spain
Spain offers two dive worlds under one flag. Out in the Atlantic, the Canary Islands ride volcanic slopes into clear blue water: lava arches, black sand, angel sharks resting on the bottom in season, rays, and year-round mild conditions that have made the islands Europe's winter dive refuge. On the Mediterranean's Costa Brava, the Medes Islands show what four decades of strict protection can do — dusky groupers the size of hay bales, barracuda schools, and gorgonian-covered drop-offs a short ride from L'Estartit. Diving is well organized, competitively priced, and easily woven into a normal Spanish holiday of food, towns, and coastline. Seasons matter in the Med; the Canaries barely acknowledge them.
Two registry destinations. The Canary Islands spread across seven main islands, with Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote the busiest bases for shore and boat diving on volcanic reefs and wrecks. The Medes Islands, a small protected archipelago off L'Estartit in Catalonia, are dived under a permit system, with the adjacent Montgrí coast adding caves and walls.
Signature experiences: An angel shark materializing from Canary sand; groupers escorting divers along a Medes drop-off; lava tubes and arches in blue Atlantic water; barracuda circling above Mediterranean gorgonians; a proper Spanish lunch as the surface interval.
Seasons: The Canaries dive year-round — winter water is cooler but conditions hold, which is exactly their appeal. The Mediterranean season effectively runs May-October, warmest and busiest in high summer, with early autumn combining warm water and thinning crowds; winter Med diving is possible but cold and quiet.

The practical file
Getting there: The Canaries have heavy direct traffic from across Europe into Tenerife (TFS/TFN), Gran Canaria (LPA), Lanzarote (ACE), and Fuerteventura (FUE). For the Medes, fly to Barcelona (BCN) or Girona and drive roughly 1-1.5 hours to L'Estartit.
Entry & visas: Spain is in the Schengen area; Schengen short-stay rules apply for most visitors. Verify current requirements for your nationality before travel.
What diving costs: Single boat dives commonly run around EUR 35-60 with packages cheaper per dive; Medes permit fees add a small surcharge. Overall costs match mainstream Spanish tourism — moderate by western-European standards.
Language: Spanish is official nationwide, with Catalan co-official on the Costa Brava; dive centers routinely work in English, German, and other European languages.
Tipping: Tipping is light in Spain — rounding up or a euro or two is normal, with dive-crew tips welcome but never assumed.
Travel safety: Spain is a safe, easy destination; pickpocketing in tourist zones is the standard caution. In the water, mind boat traffic in busy Canary bays, surge on exposed lava coasts, and the Med's summer crowds at permit sites. Marine-reserve rules at the Medes are enforced — no gloves, no touching, stay with your group.
