Sudan's Red Sea has long been spoken of the way divers speak of the past tense of Egypt: the same blue water and coral walls, almost none of the boats. From Port Sudan, liveaboards historically ran to Sanganeb's lighthouse-topped atoll, to Sha'ab Rumi — where remnants of Cousteau's 1963 Precontinent II underwater-living experiment still sit on the reef — and to the Umbria, an Italian ship scuttled in 1940 with its cargo intact, one of the world's great wrecks. Schooling hammerheads, gray reef sharks, and untouched coral built the reputation. That reputation is currently theoretical: armed conflict since April 2023 has halted normal tourism, and this entry documents the diving for reference, not as an invitation to plan travel now.

Getting there: Historically via flights to Port Sudan (PZU), often through Cairo or Gulf hubs, or occasional boat repositioning from Egypt. Routes and access are unreliable under current conditions; treat all logistics as to-be-verified if and when tourism resumes.
Entry & visas: Sudanese visas were required and typically arranged with liveaboard operator support; under current conditions normal visa processing and tourist entry cannot be assumed. Verify everything through official channels if the situation changes.
What diving costs: Sudan was effectively liveaboard-only, with week-long charters historically pricing in the mid-thousands of US dollars including permits and fees; there is no meaningful current price picture while operations are suspended.
Language: Arabic is the principal language (with English holding official status); English proficiency among dive crews was good, less so ashore.
Tipping: Liveaboard crew tips were customary, typically pooled at the end of a charter.
Travel safety: The honest picture: Sudan has been in a large-scale armed conflict since April 2023, with fighting, displacement, and strikes that have at times reached the Port Sudan area. Most foreign ministries advise against all travel to the country, and the Red Sea liveaboard trade is effectively suspended.
