Tanzania's diving lives on its islands. Off Zanzibar's northeast tip, the Mnemba conservation area gathers the archipelago's densest fish life — turtles, sweetlips walls, darting tuna — over easy reef slopes, with dolphins often escorting the boats. South across the channel, Mafia Island runs at a slower pulse: Chole Bay's protected coral gardens inside a marine park, tidal channels that concentrate life, and, in season, one of the Indian Ocean's most reliable whale-shark aggregations feeding just off Kilindoni in plankton-green water. Both pair naturally with safari circuits and Stone Town's history, which is how most itineraries arrive. Conditions are warm and generally gentle, driven more by tides and monsoon winds than by anything dramatic.

Two registry destinations. Zanzibar & Mnemba covers the main island's operators — Nungwi and Matemwe for the Mnemba atoll circuit, plus southern and Stone Town-area sites. Mafia Island centers on Chole Bay inside Mafia Island Marine Park, with channel drifts and outer-wall dives tide-permitting, and surface whale-shark trips off Kilindoni in season.

Besondere Erlebnisse: Snorkeling beside a feeding whale shark off Mafia between October and February; turtle after turtle on Mnemba's slopes; drift dives through Kinasi Pass as the tide floods; dhows under sail past the dive boat; Stone Town alleys and spice-farm afternoons ashore.

Saisons: Two dry windows anchor the year: June-October (cooler, settled) and December-February (hotter, calm mornings). The long rains around March-May soften visibility and close some operations. Mafia's whale-shark season runs roughly October through February; Chole Bay diving is tide-dependent year-round.

Anreise: Zanzibar's Abeid Amani Karume International (ZNZ) receives direct international and regional flights. Mafia is reached by small aircraft from Dar es Salaam (DAR) to Mafia's airstrip; there is no practical ferry route for visitors. Dar and Kilimanjaro serve safari connections.

Einreise & Visa: Most visitors need a Tanzanian visa, widely handled as an eVisa or on arrival; verify current requirements and Zanzibar-specific arrival formalities (including any insurance rules) before travel.

Was Tauchen kostet: Two-tank boat trips commonly run about US$90-140, with marine-park fees added on Mafia; lodging spans budget Zanzibar guesthouses to upscale beach hotels, keeping overall costs moderate for the Indian Ocean.

Sprache: Swahili and English are the working languages; English is standard in dive centers, and learning basic Swahili greetings is warmly received.

Trinkgeld: Tipping is an established part of Tanzanian tourism; around 10 percent in restaurants and end-of-stay tips for dive crews and hotel staff are customary.

Reisesicherheit: Tourist areas are generally relaxed; petty theft argues for the usual care in Stone Town and on beaches after dark. This is a malaria zone — seek medical advice on prophylaxis. On the water, tidal currents in channels and long small-boat rides in the whale-shark season are the practical considerations.

Dekompressionskammer in der Nähe: Recompression coverage is limited and has changed over the years; confirm the nearest functioning chamber and evacuation plan with your operator before diving, and route emergencies through local EMS and DAN.

Druckkammern (Planungsreferenz) Zanzibar hyperbaric chamber (Matemwe/Nungwi area), Zanzibar. Verfügbarkeit kann sich ändern – im Notfall zuerst den lokalen Rettungsdienst und DAN (+1-919-684-9111) anrufen. Vollständiges Verzeichnis →
