Tanzania's diving lives on its islands. Off Zanzibar's northeast tip, the Mnemba conservation area gathers the archipelago's densest fish life — turtles, sweetlips walls, darting tuna — over easy reef slopes, with dolphins often escorting the boats. South across the channel, Mafia Island runs at a slower pulse: Chole Bay's protected coral gardens inside a marine park, tidal channels that concentrate life, and, in season, one of the Indian Ocean's most reliable whale-shark aggregations feeding just off Kilindoni in plankton-green water. Both pair naturally with safari circuits and Stone Town's history, which is how most itineraries arrive. Conditions are warm and generally gentle, driven more by tides and monsoon winds than by anything dramatic.

Two registry destinations. Zanzibar & Mnemba covers the main island's operators — Nungwi and Matemwe for the Mnemba atoll circuit, plus southern and Stone Town-area sites. Mafia Island centers on Chole Bay inside Mafia Island Marine Park, with channel drifts and outer-wall dives tide-permitting, and surface whale-shark trips off Kilindoni in season.

ट्रैवल सेफ्टी: Tourist areas are generally relaxed; petty theft argues for the usual care in Stone Town and on beaches after dark. This is a malaria zone — seek medical advice on prophylaxis. On the water, tidal currents in channels and long small-boat rides in the whale-shark season are the practical considerations.
