Diving in Vanuatu
Vanuatu owes its place on the world dive map to a single ship. The SS President Coolidge, a luxury liner converted to a troopship, struck friendly mines entering Espiritu Santo's Segond Channel in October 1942 and now lies on its port side within swimming distance of shore — nearly 200 meters of liner-turned-warship, from guns and gas masks to chandeliers' ghosts and the famous porcelain figure of The Lady. Divers spend whole weeks working deeper into her. Around Santo, Million Dollar Point piles bulldozers and trucks the US dumped at war's end, inland blue holes glow freshwater-sapphire, and coral reefs carry on unbothered. It is warm, friendly, shore-based diving with a serious technical ceiling for those trained to use it.
The registry destination is Espiritu Santo, based around Luganville. The Coolidge and Million Dollar Point sit minutes from town along the Segond Channel, dived mostly from shore with guides who know the ship room by room; reef sites off Tutuba and nearby islets and the crystal inland blue holes round out surface-interval-friendly days.
Signature experiences: First sight of the Coolidge's bow looming from the slope; meeting The Lady deep in the first-class smoking room with a torch; coral-crusted bulldozers at Million Dollar Point; floating in the blue glow of Nanda or Riri blue hole; kava at a Luganville nakamal after the gear is rinsed.
Seasons: The April-October dry season brings cooler air, calmer seas, and the most reliable conditions; November-March is hotter, wetter, and within cyclone season. The Coolidge itself, sheltered in the channel and dived from shore, remains diveable most of the year around weather.

Getting there: Fly to Port Vila (VLI) via Brisbane, Sydney, Auckland, or Fiji, then hop to Santo-Pekoa (SON); direct Brisbane-Santo services have operated as well. Luganville and the dive sites are a short drive from the airstrip.
Entry & visas: Many nationalities receive visitor entry on arrival for short stays; verify current requirements with Vanuatu immigration before travel.
What diving costs: Guided Coolidge dives commonly price around US$60-90 each with multi-dive packages standard, keeping Santo good value; flights across the Pacific are the main cost, and lodging spans simple motels to small resorts.
Language: Bislama, English, and French are official; English is standard in dive shops, and a little Bislama earns instant goodwill.
Tipping: Tipping is not customary in Vanuatu and can even feel out of place; a thank-you, repeat business, or a small gift to the crew suits local culture better.
Travel safety: Vanuatu is welcoming and low-crime, with ordinary precautions sufficient in towns. Plan around nature instead: cyclone season (November-April), an active seismic setting, and malaria presence in northern islands including Santo — take medical advice on prophylaxis. On the Coolidge, depth adds up fast; follow guides, respect training limits, and treat deeper penetrations as the technical dives they are.
Recompression cover: A recompression chamber has operated in Port Vila with private medical providers; status can change, so confirm arrangements with your operator, and route emergencies through local EMS and DAN with evacuation cover in place.
