The SS President Coolidge, a luxury liner converted to a troopship, struck friendly mines entering Espiritu Santo's Segond Channel in October 1942 and now lies on its port side within swimming distance of shore — nearly 200 meters of liner-turned-warship, from guns and gas masks to chandeliers' ghosts and the famous porcelain figure of The Lady. Divers spend whole weeks working deeper into her. Around Santo, Million Dollar Point piles bulldozers and trucks the US dumped at war's end, inland blue holes glow freshwater-sapphire, and coral reefs carry on unbothered.
