Ari Atoll
Ari is the Maldives' big-animal atoll. Whale sharks cruise the outer reef of the South Ari Marine Protected Area in every month of the year, hammerheads rise from the blue off neighboring Rasdhoo at dawn, and the atoll interior is studded with thilas — Maaya Thila and Fish Head among the most storied pinnacles in the country. Liveaboards, resorts, and a growing guesthouse scene all share it.
Waarom hier duiken
Ari's geography differs from the eastern atolls: fewer classic channels, more open rim, and an interior scattered with dozens of freestanding pinnacles. That structure concentrates life in tight, circlable packages. At Fish Head, gray reef sharks ride the current line past a terraced pinnacle mobbed by fusiliers; at Maaya Thila, whitetips hunt through the coral heads after dark on one of the world's best-known night dives. The southern rim adds the headline act: the South Ari outer reef is the only place in the Maldives with a year-round whale shark aggregation, juvenile sharks cruising the drop-off in the top 10 meters. Broken Rock and Kudarah Thila pack soft coral, sweetlips, and swim-through terrain into a few hundred meters of reef. Day one can be a gentle thila; day three can be a dawn hammerhead drop off Rasdhoo. Few destinations cover that spread inside a single atoll.

Hoe kom je er: From Malé, a 20-minute domestic hop to Maamigili serves South Ari, seaplanes reach resorts directly, and scheduled speedboats connect local islands in 1.5-2 hours.
Waar verblijven: Dhigurah and Dhangethi are the main guesthouse bases in the south; resorts dot the whole atoll and liveaboards thread the interior year-round.
Liveaboards: Ari anchors the classic central-atolls liveaboard circuit; a week typically covers Rasdhoo, the western thilas, and the South Ari whale shark reef.
Kosten: Guesthouse islands such as Dhigurah and Dhangethi undercut resort pricing. Service charge and GST are usually added; whale shark excursions price separately.
