Dumaguete, Dauin & Apo Island
The Dauin coast, just south of the university city of Dumaguete on Negros, pairs two very different pleasures: world-class muck diving on volcanic black sand, and Apo Island, one of the earliest and most celebrated community-managed marine sanctuaries in the Philippines. Why dive here
Dauin's shoreline looks like nothing from the surface, a strip of dark sand between fishing villages, and that is exactly the point. The municipal sanctuaries strung along it hide a critter census that rivals anywhere in Asia: hairy and giant frogfish, mimic and blue-ringed octopus, ghost pipefish, sea moths, and shrimp gardens around sunken car bodies and fish-attracting structures. Guides here find animals by memory, not luck. Twenty to forty minutes offshore, Apo Island changes the register entirely; village-run protection since the 1980s, developed with Silliman University researchers, rebuilt a reef where green turtles graze in easy reach and jacks stream past coral slopes. The pairing makes the area unusually complete for photographers, and Dumaguete's flights, hospitals, and restaurants keep logistics painless. It is quiet, inexpensive, and adult in tone, a diver's destination rather than a resort scene.

Getting there & staying
Getting there: Fly from Manila or Cebu to Dumaguete, then drive 20-40 minutes south to the Dauin resorts; Apo Island sits about 7 km offshore, reached by banca from Dauin or Malatapay.
Where to stay: Dive resorts dot the Dauin shoreline from budget to boutique, most with spotters, camera facilities, and house-reef access; Dumaguete city offers hotels, hospitals, and a lively boulevard fifteen minutes away.
Costs: Expect roughly US$25-40 per dive plus sanctuary fees, with Apo Island trips priced as multi-dive outings including the boat crossing and island fees.
Between dives: Twin crater lakes at Balinsasayao, waterfalls inland, Dumaguete's promenade and cafe scene, and dolphin-watching trips in Tañon Strait.
Snorkeling: Apo Island's shallow sanctuary areas offer some of the country's best turtle snorkeling on calm days.
Safety & practicalities
Hazards: Venomous muck residents (blue-ringed octopus, stonefish, stinging hydroids), silty bottoms that punish poor trim, and current plus chop on the Apo Island crossing and points.
Sanctuary rules are enforced: no gloves, no touching, small groups at Apo. On the sand, stay off the bottom and let guides handle positioning; on Apo's points, follow the current plan briefed on the boat.
Nearest recompression: Recompression support is nearest in Cebu City, reached by road and fast ferry or flight. Availability changes; emergencies go through EMS and DAN.
