Espiritu Santo — illustration

Espiritu Santo

Espiritu Santo is home to the SS President Coolidge, a 198-meter luxury liner turned troopship that struck friendly mines off Luganville in 1942 and now lies on a slope a swim from shore — by common consent the most accessible great wreck on earth. Down the road, Million Dollar Point holds the bulldozers and trucks the US military drove into the sea in 1945, and inland blue holes add freshwater novelty between wreck days.

Por qué bucear aquí

Almost everything here orbits one ship. The Coolidge begins around 20 meters at the bow and runs past 60 at the stern, so a week becomes a structured descent through a 1930s liner at war: cargo holds with jeeps and helmets, three-inch guns, the promenade deck, and — for those with the depth training — the porcelain relief called The Lady deep in the first-class smoking room. Guides here have refined progression diving on this single wreck for decades; the shore entry over a coral flat makes logistics almost domestic. Million Dollar Point is the strangest second act in diving: when postwar purchase negotiations collapsed, the departing military dumped its equipment into the bay, and coral now binds axles, tracks, and engine blocks into an accidental reef. Add reef corners around Tutuba Island and jungle-framed freshwater blue holes for surface intervals, and Santo justifies the two-flight journey. Water is warm, currents modest, and depth — not conditions — is the thing that demands respect.

Mes a mes

May through October is the cooler, drier trade-wind season with the most settled conditions. November through April is hotter, wetter, and carries Vanuatu's cyclone risk; the Coolidge itself sits in sheltered water and is dived year-round.

Vida marina con la que puedes planificar

The Coolidge hosts lionfish, big groupers, moray eels, nudibranchs on the guns, and clouds of baitfish in the holds; reef corners add turtles, reef sharks, and eagle rays; the blue holes are about clarity, not fauna.

Cómo llegar y dónde alojarse

Cómo llegar: Fly to Port Vila and connect on a short domestic leg to Luganville; limited direct regional services to Santo come and go. Dive shops sit in and around town, minutes from the Coolidge entry.

Dónde alojarse: Luganville's dive lodges put you closest to the wreck; beach resorts north toward Champagne Beach trade convenience for scenery. Most Coolidge diving is shore-based with a short truck ride.

Costes: Editorial estimate for guided shore diving on the Coolidge in 2026 — Santo remains one of the cheaper places anywhere to log serious wreck dives. Deep guided sections and any technical support cost more.

Entre inmersiones: The blue holes (Matevulu, Riri, Nanda) by kayak or platform-jump, Champagne Beach and Port Olry's sands, Millennium Cave treks, kava bars, and WWII surface relics scattered through town.

Seguridad y aspectos prácticos

Riesgos: Depth is the standing hazard — the Coolidge's best rooms lie deep, and guided routes push recreational limits; silt, cables, and disorientation inside; fire coral on the entry flat. Follow the guide's plan, not your curiosity.

Build up over several days, use nitrox where it fits, keep generous reserves, and treat any penetration as the overhead dive it is. The wreck is protected by law — take nothing.

Cámara de recompresión más cercana: Vanuatu's recompression facility is in Port Vila, a flight away; availability changes. Suspected DCS cases route through EMS and DAN for evacuation.
