Kimbe Bay
Kimbe Bay, on the north coast of Papua New Guinea's New Britain, is a deep, sheltered amphitheater scattered with coral seamounts that rise from hundreds of meters to just below the surface. Scientists helped make it famous — surveys have recorded several hundred hard-coral species and roughly 900 reef fish here — and divers keep coming for whip-coral ridges, fan-covered bommies, and blue water that can fill with barracuda without warning.
Why dive here
The bay's geography does the work: volcanoes shelter it from prevailing seas, so its reefs grow undisturbed and its surface often lies glassy. Most sites are isolated pinnacles and platform reefs — places like Susan's Reef, where red whip corals lean off a ridge in the current, or Vanessa's, a fan-and-soft-coral garden with resident anemonefish colonies at every ledge. Further offshore, open-water shoals draw schooling barracuda, bigeye trevally, and passing pelagics, with hammerheads an occasional deep silhouette. This is also textbook Coral Triangle macro country — pygmy seahorses on fans, unusual nudibranchs, and a WWII Zero fighter sitting intact in the shallows as a bonus history dive. Diving runs from a famous plantation-house resort and from liveaboards that continue toward the Witu Islands and Fathers' reefs. Getting here takes a domestic connection and some patience, which is precisely why the moorings are quiet. Kimbe rewards slow diving: pick a bommie, circle it twice, and let the fish come back to work.

Where to stay: A long-established dive resort near Kimbe anchors the scene, with liveaboards departing the bay for wider New Britain itineraries. Facilities are comfortable but remote — this is expedition-flavored resort diving.
