Kimbe Bay
Kimbe Bay, on the north coast of Papua New Guinea's New Britain, is a deep, sheltered amphitheater scattered with coral seamounts that rise from hundreds of meters to just below the surface. Scientists helped make it famous — surveys have recorded several hundred hard-coral species and roughly 900 reef fish here — and divers keep coming for whip-coral ridges, fan-covered bommies, and blue water that can fill with barracuda without warning.
Mengapa menyelam di sini
The bay's geography does the work: volcanoes shelter it from prevailing seas, so its reefs grow undisturbed and its surface often lies glassy. Most sites are isolated pinnacles and platform reefs — places like Susan's Reef, where red whip corals lean off a ridge in the current, or Vanessa's, a fan-and-soft-coral garden with resident anemonefish colonies at every ledge. Further offshore, open-water shoals draw schooling barracuda, bigeye trevally, and passing pelagics, with hammerheads an occasional deep silhouette. This is also textbook Coral Triangle macro country — pygmy seahorses on fans, unusual nudibranchs, and a WWII Zero fighter sitting intact in the shallows as a bonus history dive. Diving runs from a famous plantation-house resort and from liveaboards that continue toward the Witu Islands and Fathers' reefs. Getting here takes a domestic connection and some patience, which is precisely why the moorings are quiet. Kimbe rewards slow diving: pick a bommie, circle it twice, and let the fish come back to work.

Cara ke sana & akomodasi
Cara ke sana: Fly Port Moresby to Hoskins on domestic carriers, then transfer about an hour by road to the resorts on the bay. International connections run through Port Moresby; build slack into PNG domestic schedules.
Tempat menginap: A long-established dive resort near Kimbe anchors the scene, with liveaboards departing the bay for wider New Britain itineraries. Facilities are comfortable but remote — this is expedition-flavored resort diving.
Liveaboard: Liveaboards use Kimbe as a gateway to the Witu Islands and Fathers' reefs — worth it for divers who want the outer seamounts.
Biaya: Editorial estimate for resort boat diving in 2026; PNG travel costs are dominated by flights, and liveaboard itineraries price per charter.
Di antara penyelaman: Hot springs and volcano views, birding in oil-palm and forest country, village visits, and orchid gardens. Options are low-key; most guests structure the day around two or three dives.
Keselamatan & hal-hal praktis
Bahaya: Some seamounts top out deep and sit in open water — buoyancy and depth discipline matter; current over the shoals; long distances to help.
Dive conservatively in a place where evacuation is measured in days, not hours; nitrox helps on repetitive pinnacle profiles.
Rekompresi terdekat: PNG's recompression capability is limited and centered on Port Moresby; availability changes. Any suspected case routes through the operator, EMS, and DAN, likely with medevac.
