Larnaca & the Zenobia
Larnaca's claim on world diving rests on one ship: the Zenobia, a 172-meter ferry that capsized on her maiden voyage in 1980 and sank with more than a hundred trucks aboard, settling on her port side minutes from the harbor. Around that centerpiece, southeast Cyprus adds purpose-sunk wrecks off Protaras, an underwater sculpture forest at Ayia Napa, warm water into November and some of the easiest logistics in the Mediterranean.
Waarom hier duiken
Few dive towns are this defined by a single wreck, and fewer wrecks deserve it like the Zenobia. The Swedish RO-RO ferry went down in June 1980 after listing problems on her maiden voyage — without loss of life — and now lies on her port side from 16 to about 43 m, close enough to shore that boats reach her in minutes. Articulated lorries still hang in her cargo decks on their chains; recreational divers tour the hull and bridge wing while wreck-trained teams work the vehicle decks and engine room. A week fills easily around her: repeat dives read like chapters, and the supporting cast — the scuttled Liberty and Nemesis III off Protaras, MUSAN's sculpted forest on the sand at Ayia Napa, turtle-visited bays — keeps second tanks varied. Water is warm from late spring through autumn, visibility is dependable, and Cyprus's dive industry handles everything from first bubbles to trimix without fuss.

A long season: the sea is comfortably warm from May into November and diving continues right through the mild winter, when the Zenobia is at its quietest. Summer brings the year's calmest seas and busiest boats.

Veiligheid & praktische zaken
Gevaren: The Zenobia's scale invites depth and penetration beyond training — most of the wreck's volume is genuine overhead environment at 25–43 m. Summer boat traffic is constant over the site.
Stay outside the hull without wreck certification; the cargo decks, with suspended trucks and silt, have claimed lives and belong to trained, equipped teams. Nitrox extends the shallower deck tours usefully.
