Milne Bay
Milne Bay, at Papua New Guinea's eastern tip, is where muck diving got its name: black-sand slopes off Lauadi — Dinah's Beach — taught the dive world that rubble and silt could outdraw coral. The province mixes critter bays, jetty dives, offshore reefs, and one celebrated aircraft wreck, the B-17 bomber Black Jack, resting deep off Cape Vogel for suitably trained divers on liveaboard routes.

Pioneering liveaboard operators worked these coasts in the 1980s and coined the term muck diving for what they found at Lauadi: frogfish, ghost pipefish, cephalopods, and strangeness in plain gray sand. That heritage is still the draw. Dinah's Beach and nearby Deacon's Reef pair a critter slope with a rainforest-edge coral wall; Samarai Island's old wharf, in the China Strait, stacks decades of jetty growth over mandarinfish rubble; and offshore reefs carry schooling fish with far fewer boats than PNG's better-known bays. The historic weight is real too — the 1942 Battle of Milne Bay was fought here, and the region's most famous wreck, the B-17F Black Jack, lies essentially intact below 45 meters off Cape Vogel, a bracing technical-depth dive reached on liveaboard or dedicated trips. Access is the honest caveat: flights to Alotau, boat time, modest infrastructure, and weather that makes its own plans. Divers who accept that trade get a province where sites still feel personal.

Bring redundancy, dive the plan, and keep gloves off the bottom — much of what lives in the sand defends itself. Technical dives here require genuine technical support.
