Taveuni & Rainbow Reef
Taveuni's diving happens in the Somosomo Strait, the tidal bottleneck between Fiji's garden island and Vanua Levu, where moving water feeds one of the world's great soft-coral displays. The Rainbow Reef sites bloom on the current: the Great White Wall turns an entire drop-off pale with feeding soft corals, while bommies like Annie's shimmer under clouds of anthias. Dives are timed to the tide, and the tide is worth the wait.
Waarom hier duiken
Soft corals only look like this when water moves, and the Somosomo Strait moves a lot of it. Dive operators here read tide tables the way mountain guides read weather, dropping divers at slack or on the right phase so the polyps are open and the color at full volume. The signature is the Great White Wall — a tunnel through the reef opening onto a slope of white Dendronephthya that fades down past recreational depth like a snowfield. Around it sit a dozen named sites within minutes of each other: Rainbow's End, the Purple Wall's ledges and fans, current-swept coral heads thick with fish. Between dives, Taveuni itself is one of Fiji's most beautiful islands — waterfalls in Bouma National Heritage Park, the Lavena coastal walk, and villages where sevusevu custom still opens doors. The dry season brings cooler water and the year's best visibility; the warm months trade some clarity for bathwater temperatures and the small but real cyclone risk. It is honest, tide-driven reef diving with a clear identity.

May through October — Fiji's cooler, drier season — delivers the most reliable visibility, with water bottoming out around 24–26 °C in late winter. November through April is warmer, wetter, and greener underwater, and carries Fiji's cyclone season; storms are occasional rather than constant, but they happen.

Hoe kom je er & verblijf
Hoe kom je er: Short domestic hops from Nadi or Suva land at Matei; a car or resort transfer covers the coast road. A vehicle ferry also links Taveuni with Vanua Levu and Suva for slower itineraries. Some divers instead base at Vanua Levu resorts across the strait.
Waar verblijven: Small lodges and dive resorts string along Taveuni's north and west coasts from Matei to Waiyevo; most run their own boats to the Rainbow Reef, ten to thirty minutes out.
Kosten: Editorial estimate for a two-tank Rainbow Reef trip in 2026; some operators add a small Waitabu or reef-custodianship fee for certain sites.

Gevaren: Strong tidal currents in the strait — dives are timed, and missing the window means hard swimming or a blown-out plan; surge over the shallow reef tops in wind.
Follow the operator's tide call, carry a DSMB, and keep the group tight on drift legs. Currents can accelerate over a dive rather than fade.
