Townsville & the Yongala
Townsville and the sugar town of Ayr are the gateways to the SS Yongala, a 109-meter steamship lost with all 122 aboard in a 1911 cyclone and now one of the most life-dense dives in the world. Mid-shelf reefs and the Museum of Underwater Art's Coral Greenhouse round out a region that most divers visit for the wreck alone.
为何选择这里潜水
The Yongala sits alone on open sand inside the Great Barrier Reef lagoon, and for miles in every direction it is the only structure. Everything gathers on it. Queensland grouper the size of small cars shelter under the bow, marble rays stack on the sand, eagle rays and turtles pass over the deck, bull sharks patrol the edge of visibility, and the barracuda and trevally schools can dim the light. The ship went down in a cyclone in March 1911 with every one of its 122 passengers and crew, and it is dived as both a protected heritage site and a grave: no entry, no touching, moorings only. Beyond the wreck, John Brewer Reef hosts the Coral Greenhouse, a submerged sculpture installation that doubles as a coral nursery, while Wheeler and Lodestone reefs offer easy gardens for training and second days. Trips leave from Alva Beach near Ayr for a short, often bumpy crossing, or from Townsville and Magnetic Island on longer runs.
逐月概览
August to November brings the calmest seas and cleanest water over the wreck. The site is exposed, and trips cancel in strong southeast trades; the wet season from December to March adds runoff, heat, and cyclone risk.

抵达与住宿
如何抵达: Fly to Townsville, then either dive with city-based operators or drive about 90 minutes south to Alva Beach near Ayr, where the shortest boat ride to the wreck departs. Book around the weather forecast rather than a fixed day if you can.
住宿推荐: Townsville has the full range of accommodation plus Magnetic Island a short ferry away; Alva Beach is a small settlement with dive-lodge basics.
费用: Approximate conversion from Australian dollars for a two-dive Yongala day trip from Alva Beach, including gear; Townsville and liveaboard options price differently.
两潜之间: Magnetic Island's walking tracks and koalas, the Reef HQ area and maritime history of Townsville, and the Burdekin's sugar country around Ayr.
安全与实用信息
危险因素: Strong current on the wreck, open-water exposure with no shelter, boat traffic at the moorings, and a rolling surface interval in trade-wind season. Depth and current make this a poor first ocean dive.
Treat the Yongala as an advanced dive: descend and ascend on the mooring line, keep a hand for the line in current, and leave generous reserves. Penetration is prohibited and the wreck is a grave site; dive it with respect.
最近的减压舱: Townsville hosts north Queensland's hyperbaric unit at the university hospital. Emergencies still go through EMS and DAN first; availability changes.
