Zanzibar & Mnemba
Zanzibar's diving concentrates at its northern tip, where Nungwi and Matemwe face the Mnemba conservation area — a sand-ringed islet whose surrounding reefs deliver turtles, dense reef fish, and easy drift dives over coral gardens. Beyond it, the current-swept Leven Bank gives advanced divers dogtooth tuna and trevally in open water. Add Stone Town's history and the spice-farm interior, and it is East Africa's most complete beach-and-dive island.
Why dive here
Mnemba is the draw and deserves its reputation for reliability rather than drama: green and hawksbill turtles on nearly every dive, sloping coral gardens thick with anthias and snapper, and sandy amphitheaters where morays and octopus hole up at cleaning stations. Sites such as Kichwani and Wattabomi drift gently along the atoll's rim, which keeps the diving relaxed even when the tide moves. The serious dive is Leven Bank, a submerged rise in the Pemba Channel north of Nungwi where blue water, real current, and 20-plus-meter depths bring in dogtooth tuna, big trevally, barracuda, and the occasional surprise from the channel. Conditions follow the monsoons — the long rains around April-May shut much of the island down — but outside those months the water stays warm and the surface intervals happen off postcard beaches. Dolphins are common on the boat rides, humpbacks pass in austral winter, and Stone Town gives the trip a cultural spine no pure dive destination can match.

Getting there & staying
Getting there: Direct flights arrive from the Gulf, Europe, and East African hubs; Nungwi and Matemwe are 1-1.5 hours by road from the airport. Ferries connect Stone Town with Dar es Salaam.
Where to stay: Nungwi and Kendwa in the northwest have the deepest operator bench; Matemwe faces Mnemba directly and is quieter.
Costs: Mnemba trips include a conservation-area fee; Leven Bank runs as a premium advanced trip from Nungwi.
Between dives: Stone Town's alleys and history, spice-farm tours, Jozani Forest's red colobus monkeys, kitesurfing at Paje, and dhow sunset cruises.
Snorkeling: The Mnemba conservation area is East Africa's most popular snorkel trip; lagoon sandbars off Nungwi suit families.
Safety & practicalities
Hazards: Tidal currents around Mnemba and strong current with open-ocean chop on Leven Bank; long boat rides in trade-wind season.
Save Leven Bank for advanced certification, good air consumption, and an SMB you know how to deploy in current. Mnemba's conservation rules prohibit touching reef or turtles.
Nearest recompression: Recompression cover on the island cannot be assumed — serious cases may need evacuation to regional facilities; availability changes, and emergencies go through local EMS and DAN.
