When to Go Where: Dive Seasons Around the World

There is no global dive season — there is a rolling one. A region-by-region tour of windows, monsoons, and marine-life calendars to plan a year of diving around.

Somewhere on Earth, the diving is superb this month. The trick of dive travel is that the somewhere keeps moving: monsoons swap coastlines, plankton blooms summon giants and murk the water in the same stroke, and a handful of famous places are open only a few weeks a year. What follows are the reliable patterns — verify the current year with operators, because seasons shift and no calendar outranks local knowledge.

Red Sea and Middle East

Egypt dives year-round. Spring and fall (roughly March–May and September–November) balance warm water and calm seas; summer is fiercely hot topside but brings the offshore action, while winter cools the water to the low twenties and thins the crowds. Oman's Daymaniyat Islands peak roughly September to April.

Southeast Asia

The Coral Triangle splits by coast. Thailand's Similan Islands are a seasonal park, open roughly mid-October to mid-May and closed the rest of the year. Komodo's main season runs about April to November; Raja Ampat is calmest from roughly October through April; the central Philippines dive best in the dry months from about November to May. Tubbataha is the extreme case — liveaboards run only from mid-March to mid-June, and there is no second chance until the following year.

Indian Ocean and East Africa

The Maldives' northeast-monsoon season, December to April, brings the calmest seas and clearest water; the southwest season is wetter and greener but drives the famous Hanifaru Bay manta aggregation in Baa Atoll, roughly June to November — a snorkel-only site under biosphere rules. Off East Africa, Mafia Island's whale sharks show most reliably from about October to February, and South Africa's sardine run churns up the Wild Coast from roughly May to July.

Pacific

Palau is driest and calmest from about November through April. Socorro's liveaboard season runs November to May, with humpback whales passing through in the winter months. The Galápagos work year-round in two moods: the warmer, calmer season from about December to May, and the cool plankton-rich months of June to November, when whale sharks visit the northern islands and wetsuits get thicker. In French Polynesia, Fakarava's famous grouper spawning aggregation peaks around the full moons of June and July.

Caribbean and Atlantic

The Caribbean dives year-round, with the best visibility and weather typically December to May. The Atlantic hurricane season officially spans June to November — trips still run, but insurance and flexibility matter, and the southern islands such as Bonaire and Curaçao sit below the main storm track. Whale sharks aggregate off Isla Mujeres roughly June to September.

Australia and the temperate belt

The Great Barrier Reef is at its clearest in the austral winter, roughly June to November, with dwarf minke whales on the Ribbon Reefs in June and July. Ningaloo's whale sharks arrive with the coral spawn, about March through July. Temperate gems keep their own diaries — South Australia's giant cuttlefish gather in winter, May to August.

Build trips around these windows, book the narrow ones early, and hold plans loosely: climate patterns are shifting some of these calendars, and the operators on the ground always know the current truth better than any list.
