Shark Conservation: The Numbers, and Why Divers Should Care

Humans kill sharks by the tens of millions annually while sharks kill a handful of people a year. The biology behind the collapse, the evidence protection works, and the diver's role in the economics.

Set two numbers side by side. Unprovoked shark bites kill a handful of people worldwide in a typical year — single digits, most years. Peer-reviewed estimates of the traffic in the other direction put human-caused shark deaths at around one hundred million annually, with the published uncertainty range spanning roughly 63 to 273 million. Whatever fear the movies sold, the predation running at industrial scale goes the other way, and divers — who queue and pay to meet these animals — have standing to say so.

Why shark populations collapse so easily

The killing is driven by demand for fins and meat, and by bycatch on longlines and in gillnets that were set for something else. Shark biology turns that pressure into collapse: most large species grow slowly, mature late — well past a decade for some — and produce few young. They are built like whales, not like sardines, and fished like sardines they vanish. The global assessment is stark: over a third of shark and ray species are now threatened with extinction according to the IUCN's specialist reassessment, with oceanic species among the hardest hit.

What the ocean loses

Sharks structure ecosystems from the top — through what they eat and, just as much, through where their presence makes prey unwilling to graze and linger. Strip the sharks out and food webs reorganize in ways documented across multiple systems, rarely for the better. Divers can read the pattern without a journal subscription: the reefs where sharks remain abundant — Tubbataha, Fakarava's channels, the protected banks of the Bahamas — are overwhelmingly the reefs where everything else remains abundant too. A sharky reef is a healthy reef far more often than not.

The case that protection works

  • Sanctuaries: Palau declared the world's first national shark sanctuary in 2009, and the Bahamas, the Maldives, and others followed with bans on commercial shark fishing across their waters.
  • Trade rules: successive CITES listings — expanded sharply in 2022 — now cover most species prominent in the fin trade, requiring sustainability findings for legal export.
  • Economics: a widely cited Palau study estimated a single live reef shark generates on the order of two million US dollars in tourism revenue over its lifetime, against a one-time value of perhaps a hundred dollars dead. Follow-up work elsewhere repeats the pattern: alive and resident beats caught, by orders of magnitude.

The diver's role

Divers are the demand side of the living-shark economy, and that is real leverage. Spend your trips in places that protect sharks and let operators know that is why you came. Refuse shark products outright — fin soup most obviously, and check sourcing on squalene cosmetics and unlabeled fish and chips species where that information exists. Dive shark sites with operators who follow strict protocols, because sloppy encounters hand ammunition to closure campaigns. Contribute sightings to count programs and photo-ID databases. None of this is charity; it is keeping the other party in a transaction divers benefit from every time a gray shape resolves out of the blue and your heart does that thing it does.
