Skookumchuck - the name is Chinook Jargon for strong water - funnels the tide through Sechelt Inlet at speeds that create standing waves surfers ride. Underwater, that torrent buys the densest invertebrate carpet in British Columbia: anemones packed stem to stem, gooseneck barnacles feeding in sheets, encrusting color with no gaps, all groomed by a current that delivers food constantly and removes anything loose, divers included. The dive is a precision exercise - enter at the guide's word in the brief slack, tour the carpeted walls, and be out before the channel resumes. Operators cancel without apology when the exchange is too big. Done right, it is a masterpiece; done wrong, it is not survivable. Local expertise is not optional.
