Depth is the range from the top of the site to its usual maximum; "recommended cert" is the mainstream-agency level operators usually ask for, not a legal rule. Currents and visibility change daily — treat everything here as planning ranges.

Carwash looks like a farm pond and dives like a dream sequence. In the cooler months its water turns glassy and the sun lights a garden of lily stems from below, their pads floating overhead like green parasols — one of the most photographed views in cenote diving. In summer a red-brown tannic layer floats on the surface and tints the light amber, a different mood rather than a flaw. Along one wall the cavern zone opens under a fringe of stalactites for guided passes, and small fish, freshwater turtles, and the site's occasional young crocodile keep the shallows busy.

The moment you come for: Underwater lily garden, amber tannic light in summer, easy cavern mouth, roadside logistics.

Topography: An open pond over limestone, with lily pads and reeds at the rim and a decorated cavern mouth below one wall.

Entry: Roadside pool on the Coba road where taxis were once washed — hence the name; simple steps into open water.

Know before you splash

Hazards: Tannic layer can dim the first meters in summer; the cave zone beyond the cavern mouth is for full cave divers only.

Permits & rules: Entrance fee at the gate; cavern passes require a guide.

Conservation: The lily beds are living structure — stay horizontal and clear of the plants.
