At Champagne, Dominica's volcano exhales through the seabed. Streams of warm bubbles rise from vents among the boulders, wobbling toward the surface in silver columns that divers swim through like weather, and patches of sand nearby run noticeably warm to the touch. The novelty draws the crowds, but the reef holds attention on its own terms: sponges crust the volcanic stone, juvenile fish shelter in the cobble, and the seagrass edge turns up seahorses, flying gurnards, and hunting squid. Shallow, warm, and endlessly strange, it suits snorkelers and photographers as much as divers.
