The Afuera
The Afuera is not a dive site in the ordinary sense — tanks stay on the boat by rule — but no honest guide to this coast can leave it out. In midsummer, whale sharks converge here to sieve the spawn of little tunny from the surface film, mouths agape, dorsal fins slicing a sea that can hold dozens of animals in view at once; a published aerial count once tallied roughly 420. Manta rays loop through the same slick. Guests slip in two at a time with a guide, swim hard, and come home rearranged. Regulation is tight and enforcement real: bracelets, licensed boats, no touching, no scuba.
Der Moment, für den du kommst: The world's largest documented whale-shark aggregation, surface feeding behavior, mantas in the same water.
Topografie: Deep open water over the continental shelf; all action is in the top few meters.
Strömung: Open-ocean drift at the surface; the boats reposition constantly.
Einstieg: Long panga run into open water northeast of the island; guided surface drops beside feeding animals, snorkel gear only.
Was du wissen solltest, bevor du ins Wasser gehst
Gefahren: Boat propellers around swimmers are the serious risk; long swims in open water demand basic fitness.
Genehmigungen & Regeln: Snorkel only — scuba is prohibited on whale-shark tours; licensed boats and reserve bracelets are mandatory.
Naturschutz: A biosphere-reserve activity with per-boat guest limits; pick operators who hold distance discipline even when others do not.
