The Georg Thiele was one of the German destroyers trapped in the fjords during the two naval battles of Narvik in April 1940; out of ammunition at the end of the second battle, she was run against the shore of Rombaksfjord and abandoned, and her remains still lie against that mountainside today. The wreck descends the slope from shallow water into the fjord's darkness, torn steel testifying to the fighting, with cold-water anemones softening the edges. Men died in these battles, and respectful diving is expected. History this raw, in scenery this stark, is the point of Narvik diving.
Topographie: The remains of a German destroyer against the steep shore of Rombaksfjord, running from shallow water down the slope
Entrée: Dived with local cold-water operators out of the Narvik area; conditions in the fjord are dark, cold and weather-dependent.
À savoir avant de plonger
Dangers: Cold dark water, sharp unstable wreckage on a steep slope, and depth creep toward the fjord floor.
Conservation: A historic battle site: artifacts and human history stay where they lie, and dives are conducted with restraint.
