SS Nebo
La historia
The Nebo never finished her first job. The new British steamer left England in 1884 loaded with sections of railway bridge for the expanding Natal colony, and on 20 May, on her maiden voyage's final approach along the coast, she went down over Aliwal Shoal in heavy weather. The court of inquiry blamed the shoal; local legend has long argued about whether she struck it at all or was simply overwhelmed, capsized by her towering deck cargo — either way, her crew got away in the boats, and the brand-new ship settled upside down on the sand. That inverted attitude still defines the dive. She lies hull-up in about 27 meters, her plates now a reef roof: divers cruise the intact turn of the bilge, peer beneath the edges where the hull stands off the sand, and circle the prop and rudder area at the stern. Brindle bass and shoals of goldies have colonized her as thoroughly as the neighboring Produce, ragged-tooth sharks appear in the cooler months, and after 140 years she ranks among the oldest routinely dived wrecks on the African coast.
