Cave diving in France
France's cave diving is concentrated in limestone karst, where underground rivers return to daylight at resurgences (springs fed by a cave river). The cave-diving site catalogue hosted by the Fédération française de spéléologie lists sites in dozens of départements, with the Lot, Ardèche, Doubs, Jura and Vaucluse among the best documented. Exploration has long been shared between caving-federation divers (FFS) and the national cave-diving commission of the FFESSM, whose magazine Subaqua publishes regular exploration reports.
How access works
There is no single national permit system in the sources consulted. Access is handled site by site through communes, landowners and local custom: some springs ask divers to report each dive to the emergency services or gendarmerie, some limit parking at the landowner's request, and some have been closed to diving entirely while access works are carried out. Many resurgences flood after rain, so diving is also governed in practice by water level.
