The Similan Islands vs Sipadan

Similan Islands & Richelieu Rock

Sipadan & Mabul

Sipadan & Mabul

Malaysia
La respuesta cortaTwo hard constraints frame this choice. Thailand's Similan park closes annually from roughly mid-May to mid-October, and its best diving is a multi-night liveaboard out of Khao Lak. Sipadan dives year-round but rations access through a strict daily permit cap, allocated through the resorts on neighboring Mabul and Kapalai — book well ahead. Thailand wins on price and ease; Sipadan wins on sheer fish biomass off its wall. Whale-shark hopefuls sail for Richelieu Rock late season; big-fish devotees secure permits and set alarms for the bumphead dawn.
Elige Similan Islands & Richelieu Rock Pick the Similans for an affordable liveaboard through granite-boulder scenery with a genuine whale shark chance at Richelieu Rock late in the season.
Elige Sipadan & Mabul Pick Sipadan for concentrated big-fish walls — barracuda tornadoes, dawn bumphead parades, turtles everywhere — and plan around the daily permit.

State the constraints first, because they shape everything. Mu Ko Similan National Park closes every year from about mid-May to mid-October for the southwest monsoon; there is no shoulder-season workaround. Sipadan is open year-round — April through September is the kindest window — but Malaysia caps the number of divers permitted each day, permits are distributed through operators, and nobody has stayed overnight on the island since the resorts were removed in 2004. You sleep on Mabul or Kapalai and take your permitted day when it comes.

Within those rules, the diving diverges beautifully. The Similans are a granite landscape: house-sized boulders tumbled into swim-throughs and canyons on the western sides, easy coral slopes on the east, all covered on relaxed four-to-five-night liveaboards from Khao Lak. The route's crescendo is Richelieu Rock, a purple-tinged pinnacle in open sea where late-season boats watch for whale sharks, and Koh Bon's ridge adds a manta chance. Thai liveaboards remain some of the best value in the sport.

Sipadan is a single oceanic drop-off with an ecosystem out of proportion to its size. Off Barracuda Point, barracuda school into a rotating silver cylinder big enough to swallow your buddy team; bumphead parrotfish graze past in dawn herds; green turtles are so numerous they become scenery. Non-permit days turn to Mabul's celebrated muck diving, so a week balances spectacle with small wonders.

Budget travelers and boulder romantics head for Thailand; fish-density chasers accept Sipadan's paperwork. Neither asks for more than solid recreational skills, though both reward comfort in current.
