Diving in Fiji
Fiji calls itself the soft coral capital of the world, a title coined by Jean-Michel Cousteau, and the reefs back it up. Wherever tidal current pushes through a pass, the walls bloom with soft corals in implausible purples, oranges, and reds, densest along the Somosomo Strait's Rainbow Reef and its Great White Wall, where the coral turns a ghostly pale blue-white down the slope. South of Viti Levu, Beqa Lagoon runs one of the world's most famous shark dives, with bull sharks and, at times, tigers drawing close under a well-drilled feeding protocol. In between lie hundreds of reefs, friendly village-linked dive operations, and a hospitality culture that turns a dive week into something warmer. Conditions are mostly easy to moderate, with current the ingredient that makes the color happen.
Taveuni and Rainbow Reef sit on the Somosomo Strait, where tidal exchange feeds the soft-coral walls and the Great White Wall; operators time dives to the current windows. Beqa Lagoon and Pacific Harbour, off southern Viti Levu, pair the staged bull-shark encounters with lagoon reefs and wrecks. Further-flung groups like the Yasawas, Kadavu, and Bligh Water reward liveaboards and longer stays.
Signature experiences: The Great White Wall's cascade of pale soft coral on a running tide; eight-plus shark species on Beqa's arena dives, bull sharks at arm's length; drift dives through technicolor bommies on Rainbow Reef; village visits and kava on surface intervals.
Seasons: The drier austral winter, roughly May through October, brings the clearest water and most reliable conditions; November through April is warmer, wetter, and cyclone-prone, though diving continues between systems. Soft coral shows best when the tide runs, so operators chase current windows rather than calendar dates.

Getting there: Nadi (NAN) receives long-haul flights from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sydney, Auckland, and Asia. Taveuni is a domestic hop (TVU); Pacific Harbour is a two-to-three-hour road transfer from Nadi or a shorter run from Suva. Boat transfers to island resorts round out the chain.
Entry & visas: Many nationalities, including US, UK, EU, Australian, and New Zealand citizens, typically receive visa-free entry for short tourist stays. Verify current requirements before travel.
What diving costs: Two-tank boat trips typically run about USD 130-200, with Beqa shark dives around USD 200-260 including marine-park levies; resort dive packages and liveaboards price above the Caribbean average but below Polynesia.
Language: English is official alongside Fijian and Fiji Hindi; every dive operation runs in English.
Tipping: Tipping is not traditional in Fiji; many resorts instead keep a communal staff fund box, and contributions there are the graceful way to say thanks.
Travel safety: Fiji is welcoming and low-key; petty theft exists in towns, but resort and village areas are relaxed. Cyclone season, November through April, is the main planning risk. On shark dives, the operators' protocols exist for good reason: follow positioning instructions exactly. Remote islands mean medical help can be hours away, so insurance with evacuation cover is sensible.
Recompression cover: Fiji's recompression facility is in Suva, on Viti Levu, which can mean a boat-and-road or air transfer from the outer islands. Availability changes; route emergencies through your operator, Fijian EMS, and DAN.
