Shark Reef Marine Reserve

This is the most controlled wild-shark encounter in the Pacific, and the control is the point. Divers kneel shoulder to shoulder behind a low rubble wall while feeders draw a procession past the line: bull sharks first among them, thick as barrels, with sicklefin lemons, tawny nurses, and reef sharks working the margins and a tiger shark appearing often enough to be plausible any day. Levels are structured — a deeper arena, then shallower stations — and giant trevally and grouper riot around every scrap. The dive funds the reserve and the villages that retired their fishing rights, an arrangement divers can see working in real time.

The moment you come for: Bull sharks in close formation; the occasional tiger shark; a conservation model where the fee visibly protects the reef.

Topography: A coral arena and rubble amphitheater on a reef slope, purpose-managed for provisioned shark dives

Entry: Short run from Pacific Harbour; divers descend as a group and take assigned positions behind the coral rubble wall.

Hazards: Large provisioned predators at close range — the safety record rests on strict protocol, so follow the briefing exactly; visibility drops after heavy rain.

Permits & rules: Marine-park levy charged on every shark dive; feed dives run only with the licensed operators.

Conservation: Fiji's first National Marine Park (2014); the per-diver levy pays custodial villages. Positions, hand discipline, and ascent rules are non-negotiable.

Nitrox: Worth it here — profiles sit in the range where enriched air meaningfully extends no-stop time (with the training to use it).
