Diving in Mozambique

Mozambique is southern Africa's megafauna coastline, and Tofo is its worn, sandy, likeable capital. The Inhambane coast's plankton-rich Agulhas-fed waters support what researchers have documented as one of the world's important year-round manta populations, both reef and oceanic, along with whale sharks cruising the surface lanes, humpback whales streaming past in the austral winter, and deeper reefs where smalltooth sand tigers and marble rays appear on the famous ledges of Manta Reef and Giant's Castle. This is ocean diving with an expedition edge: launches punch out through surf, swells arrive uninvited, and visibility swings with the plankton that feeds the giants. Infrastructure is simple, research NGOs share the town with dive shops, and the reward for the bumpy ride is big-animal diving that costs a fraction of its fame.

Tofo Beach is the registry destination and the hub of the Inhambane coast: surf-launch boats reach manta cleaning stations like Manta Reef to the south and deeper stations north toward Giant's Castle, with ocean safaris chasing whale sharks over the sandy shallows between. The wider coast, from Ponta do Ouro's southern reefs to the Bazaruto and Quirimbas archipelagos, extends the same big-animal story for longer itineraries.

Signature experiences: Reef and oceanic mantas stacking over cleaning stations; whale-shark snorkel safaris off the beach; humpback song loud enough to feel from June into October; deep-ledge encounters with smalltooth sand tigers for experienced divers; launching through surf with the whole boat cheering.

Seasons: Diving runs all year with two flavors: the austral winter, roughly June through October, brings cooler, often clearer water and the humpback migration, while the hot, plankton-rich summer months lift whale-shark and manta activity at the cost of visibility. Late in the year, roughly August through December, catches the best overlap; cyclones occasionally brush the coast in summer.

Getting there: Fly into Maputo (MPM) and connect to Inhambane (INH), which also receives regional flights from Johannesburg; Tofo is then a short road transfer. Overlanding from South Africa is common but long. Operators arrange pickups, and road quality argues for daylight travel.

Entry & visas: Mozambique has eased tourist entry in recent years, with visa-free access or visas on arrival available to many nationalities and an e-visa system in place. Verify current requirements for your passport before travel.

What diving costs: Two-tank ocean launches typically run about USD 90-130, with ocean safaris and marine-megafauna surcharges modest; lodging spans backpacker to boutique and keeps overall costs low for what the diving delivers.

Language: Portuguese is the official language; English is standard in Tofo's dive shops and lodges but thin beyond the tourist coast.

Tipping: Tipping around 10 percent is customary in restaurants, and dive crews, skippers, and lodge staff genuinely appreciate end-of-stay tips in any hard currency.

Travel safety: Tofo and the Inhambane coast are relaxed, with petty theft the main caution; avoid unlit beach walks at night. The insurgency that has troubled Cabo Delgado lies far to the north of the southern dive coast, but check current advisories for any itinerary beyond it. Malaria is present, roads are slow, and surf launches plus real swell make this a destination where fitness and honest self-assessment matter.

Recompression cover: There is no recompression chamber on the southern Mozambique dive coast; serious cases are evacuated to South African facilities. Availability changes; dive conservatively, carry evacuation insurance, and route emergencies through your operator and DAN.
