Diving in Philippines

The Philippines packs an implausible range of world-class diving into one archipelago. Thresher sharks rise from deep water to cleaning stations off Malapascua at dawn; millions of sardines ball and split against the Moalboal reef; Anilao and Dauin serve some of the planet's best macro and muck; Coron's lagoons hide a fleet of Japanese ships sunk in a single 1944 air raid; and far out in the Sulu Sea, Tubbataha's walls run wild with sharks and turtles during its short liveaboard season. Costs stay friendly, English is everywhere, and dive operations range from backpacker shacks to polished resorts. Typhoon season and inter-island logistics need respect, but few countries reward a repeat visit like this one.

Six registry destinations span the country. Tubbataha Reefs, a remote Sulu Sea marine park, is liveaboard-only in a strict spring window. Anilao, south of Manila, is the macro classic. In the Visayas, Moalboal brings the sardine run and walls, Malapascua the thresher sharks, and Dumaguete-Dauin muck diving plus Apo Island's turtle-rich reefs. Coron, in Palawan, is the WWII wreck lagoon.

Signature experiences: A thresher shark circling a cleaning station in blue dawn light; the Moalboal sardine ball swallowing your bubbles; rare frogfish and nudibranchs on Anilao's slopes; torch-lit swim-throughs in Coron's engine rooms; Tubbataha's shark-patrolled walls from a liveaboard deck.

Seasons: The amihan (northeast monsoon) months of roughly November-May bring the driest, calmest conditions across most destinations. Tubbataha is the hard constraint: the park's liveaboard season runs only mid-March to mid-June. June-October is wetter and typhoon-prone, though many Visayas sites still dive well between systems.

Getting there: Manila (MNL) and Cebu (CEB) are the international gateways. Anilao is a 2-3 hour drive from Manila; Malapascua and Moalboal are road-plus-boat hops from Cebu; Dumaguete (DGT) and Busuanga for Coron (USU) have domestic links; Tubbataha liveaboards depart Puerto Princesa.

Entry & visas: Many nationalities receive visa-free entry for short tourist stays with extensions available; rules and durations change, so verify current requirements with Philippine immigration before travel.

What diving costs: Fun dives commonly run US$25-45 each at resort areas, with courses among the world's cheapest; Tubbataha liveaboards are the exception, pricing at a premium for the short season. Lodging and food span backpacker to boutique at friendly rates.

Language: Filipino and English are official; English is spoken throughout the dive industry and daily life, making this one of Asia's easiest countries for anglophone travelers.

Tipping: Tipping is appreciated and increasingly expected in dive tourism; guides, boat crews, and liveaboard staff are commonly tipped at trip's end.

Travel safety: The main dive destinations are welcoming and heavily touristed, with ordinary petty-theft precautions sufficient. Government advisories long-standing for parts of western Mindanao and the Sulu archipelago do not describe the listed destinations, though Tubbataha crossings are remote by nature and run with park rangers present. Typhoons (June-November especially) can upend ferry and flight plans; build slack into itineraries.
