Marsa Alam & the Deep South
Marsa Alam opened the Egyptian deep south to divers who want reef quality over resort bustle. Its coastline alternates quiet bays and offshore reefs: dugongs grazing the seagrass at Abu Dabbab, resident spinner dolphins at Samadai and Sataya, hard-coral labyrinths across Fury Shoals, and - 10 kilometers out - the sheer-sided ridge of Elphinstone with its autumn oceanic whitetips. Ecolodges on private bays set the tone more than hotels do.
Perché immergersi qui
The south rewards patience with encounters the north cannot match. Elphinstone's long, narrow ridge drops in walls on both flanks, and from October into December oceanic whitetip sharks work its plateaus close enough for divers to study their escorts of pilot fish. Abu Dabbab's seagrass bay shelters dugongs and green turtles the size of coffee tables; Sha'ab Samadai and Sataya hold resident spinner dolphin pods inside managed lagoons; and the Fury Shoals system spreads some of the Red Sea's healthiest hard coral across cavern mazes like Sha'ab Claudio. The diving culture matches the terrain - unlimited house-reef diving at ecolodge bays such as Marsa Shagra, long drives down empty coast, zodiac drops on offshore reefs. It is a slower, wilder Egypt, with fewer boats per site and more hours in the water.

Come arrivare e dove alloggiare
Come arrivare: Marsa Alam International sits by Port Ghalib, about 60 kilometers north of town; European charters land directly, or connect via Cairo. Transfers run down the coast road to lodges from Port Ghalib to Hamata.
Dove alloggiare: The signature stay is an eco-village on its own bay - tents to chalets with unlimited shore diving. Port Ghalib offers marina hotels, and Hamata serves the far south.
Liveaboard: Southern liveaboard routes from Port Ghalib sweep Elphinstone, Fury Shoals, and St John's; day boats and shore diving cover the coast.
Costi: Slightly above northern Egypt for the distances involved; house-reef packages at the ecolodges are excellent value. Managed reefs such as Samadai carry visitor fees.
Tra un'immersione e l'altra: Little by design: desert stargazing, camel and jeep trips into the Eastern Desert, kitesurfing near Hamata, and snorkeling bays that need no tank.
Snorkeling: Abu Dabbab and the managed dolphin lagoons rank with Egypt's best snorkeling; zone boundaries exist for the animals' benefit - follow them.
Sicurezza & aspetti pratici
Pericoli: Oceanic whitetips are bold, inquisitive sharks - surface waits and lone snorkelers invite close passes; offshore reefs are exposed to swell; long road distances separate services.
Follow shark-conduct briefings at Elphinstone exactly: descend promptly, stay grouped, keep hands in. Zodiac entries in swell demand honest self-assessment.
Camera iperbarica più vicina: A hyperbaric facility operates in the Marsa Alam area; availability changes - coordinate emergencies through EMS and DAN.
