Sipadan & Mabul — illustration

Sipadan & Mabul

Sipadan is Malaysia's only oceanic island, a coral cap on a pillar rising some 600 m from the Celebes Sea floor off Sabah. Its walls hold turtle numbers that sound invented until you see them, resident reef sharks, and the barracuda vortex that made Barracuda Point famous. Access is strictly rationed by permit, so divers stay on nearby Mabul or Kapalai, where muck diving fills the non-permit days.

Licenças & acessoSabah Parks caps Sipadan at a fixed daily permit quota, long set at 120 divers per day and raised in recent years (176 by widely cited accounts); permits are allocated through operators, usually one Sipadan day per several nights booked. Divers generally must hold Advanced certification or equivalent experience (about 20 logged dives), night diving is not allowed, and dive hours are restricted. Verify current quota and rules with your operator.

Por que mergulhar aqui

Few sites anywhere deliver big-animal certainty like Sipadan on a good morning: green and hawksbill turtles on nearly every ledge, whitetip and grey reef sharks patrolling the drop-offs, bumphead parrotfish herds at dawn, and chevron barracuda coiling into a wall of fish at the point that carries their name. Because the island sits in open ocean, the wall starts at your ankles and falls into serious depth within a fin kick, which concentrates life along a rim you can circle in a few days of diving. The permit system is the price of admission and also the reason it still works: daily numbers are capped, nobody sleeps on the island since resorts were cleared in 2004, and dive hours are restricted. Basing on Mabul turns limitation into variety, with frogfish, ghost pipefish, and flamboyant cuttlefish on the sand between Sipadan days. Book months ahead; the cap is real.

Mês a mês

Diveable year-round. April through September usually brings the calmest seas and longest visibility; the northeast monsoon from roughly November to February adds wind, rain, and chop without closing the season.

A altura da barra = qualidade das mergulhos naquele mês (avaliação de 1 a 5 pelos editores, com base em temporadas documentadas). Cinza plano = sem dados verificados.

Vida marinha que podes planear com antecedência

Green and hawksbill turtles in extraordinary density, chevron barracuda and bigeye trevally schools, whitetip and grey reef sharks, bumphead parrotfish at dawn, occasional scalloped hammerheads and devil rays off the deep points, and Mabul's full muck cast next door.

Como chegar e onde ficar

Como chegar: Fly to Tawau via Kuala Lumpur or Kota Kinabalu, drive about an hour to Semporna, then take a 45-60 minute boat to Mabul or Kapalai; Sipadan itself is a further 20-25 minutes on permit mornings.

Onde ficar: Nobody stays on Sipadan. Accommodation ranges from backpacker lodges on Mabul to stilted water villages and an adapted rig platform, plus Semporna town hotels for day-trip budgets; permit allocation typically favors longer resort stays.

Custos: Most divers buy resort or lodge packages on Mabul or Kapalai that bundle boats, meals, and Mabul diving, with Sipadan permit days (three boat dives) added at a premium including the park fee; budget accordingly and confirm how many permit days your stay realistically earns.

Entre mergulhos: Very little beyond island walks, water-village life on Mabul, and Semporna's markets; this corner of Sabah exists for the diving.

Segurança & aspetos práticos

Perigos: Strong, changeable currents on the points, a deep wall everywhere, and Turtle Cavern's overhead environment; regional security advisories for eastern Sabah persist even with a heavy naval presence.

Park rules cap depth-and-time behavior: watch the bottomless wall, follow guide briefings on the current-swept corners, and treat Turtle Cavern as a guided cavern dive only. Check your government's travel advisory for eastern Sabah; security escorts and curfews have been routine since the 2000s.

Câmara de recompressão mais próxima: Recompression support in Sabah is coordinated through facilities in Kota Kinabalu, a significant evacuation away. Availability changes; every emergency goes through EMS and DAN.
