Whytecliff Park, twenty minutes from downtown Vancouver in Howe Sound, is the city's beloved teaching-and-training shore dive and an early landmark of Canadian marine protection, set aside as a no-take area in the 1990s. The cobble bay starts gently - perch, kelp crabs, seastars, and seals that shadow students with obvious amusement - then the wall off the Cut drops steeply, carrying plumose anemones, cloud sponges in the depths, and octopus dens that local divers monitor like neighbors. Lingcod the size of umbrella stands glower during winter egg-guarding season. Parking, toilets, and a post-dive café complete the rare thing: world-class cold-water diving on a city bus route.
