Europe's first underwater sculpture museum, created by Jason deCaires Taylor off Lanzarote's southern coast and opened in 2016, sets more than 300 pH-neutral concrete figures on a sand stage: a walking crowd of townspeople, a raft referencing the migrant crossings, a mirrored wall with a single doorway. The art was built to be colonized, and the sea has obliged — angelsharks settle beside the statues in the cool months, octopus den in the folds of concrete clothing, and bream swirl through the crowd scenes. It is diving as slow gallery walk, best with time to read each piece.
