El Frio (Ultrafreeze)

El Frio is the local big-fish wreck, the trip guides save for divers who ask what else the area hides. The old freezer ship lies broken-backed on the sand at 30 m, far enough offshore that the water runs cooler and greener than the island reefs — bring an extra layer of neoprene and expectations of atmosphere over clarity. The reward is scale: thick black groupers in the holds, barracuda stacked over the superstructure, nurse sharks in the shadowed corners, and eagle rays crossing the sand in winter. Depth and distance keep the crowds thin.
The moment you come for: Big groupers on an old freezer ship, cool offshore atmosphere, uncrowded advanced diving.
Topography: A refrigerated cargo ship lying in about 30 m of open sand — the 'cold one', named for its cargo trade and the chilly layers that wash the site.
Current: Exposed position; thermoclines and current bands are part of the site's character.
Entry: A longer offshore run from Cancun or Isla Mujeres; anchored or live-drop descents to the hull.
Know before you splash
Hazards: Depth, cool thermoclines, current, and unstable steel; plan short bottom times.
Conservation: An aging hull collapsing into habitat; stay outside the structure.
Nitrox: Worth it here — profiles sit in the range where enriched air meaningfully extends no-stop time (with the training to use it).
