The Caves

Musandam's cliffs do not stop at the waterline, and at The Caves the sea has cut into them - a run of overhangs and short caverns at easy depth where torchlight replaces sunlight for minutes at a time. The ceilings hold pastel encrusting growth and shoals of glassy sweepers that part around divers like curtains; porcupinefish and big morays back into the darker recesses, and nudibranchs stud the shaded walls in colors the open reef rarely shows. None of the penetrations are long or committing, making this the peninsula's gentlest introduction to overhead environments and its best bad-visibility option - inside the caverns, the green haze outside stops mattering. Calm-sea days only; surge turns the cliff base into a washing machine.
