Depth is the range from the top of the site to its usual maximum; "recommended cert" is the mainstream-agency level operators usually ask for, not a legal rule. Currents and visibility change daily — treat everything here as planning ranges.

Each winter, female bull sharks — many visibly pregnant — gather over the sand flats off Playa del Carmen, and a dive industry has grown around kneeling quietly at 22 m while they patrol past. On a good December morning a line of divers may count a dozen animals moving in slow, heavy circles through the green-blue water. Some operators use bait to hold the sharks close, a practice that remains genuinely controversial in town; observation-style dives without feeding show calmer behavior and are the more defensible choice. Encounters are probable in season, never promised.

The moment you come for: Close passes from mature bull sharks, seasonal aggregation, minutes from the beach.

Topography: Flat sand and rubble plain at 20–25 m off the town beach.

Current: Open coastal water; current varies daily and dives run as slow drifts or anchored observation lines.

Entry: Short panga ride off Playa del Carmen beach; negative entry and direct descent to the sand in season.

Know before you splash

Hazards: Large predators at close range plus depth and current; hold the line formation, keep hands folded, and abort calmly if behavior changes.

Conservation: The aggregation is believed linked to gestation; choose operators who brief hard, skip feeding, and support local shark-protection efforts.

Nitrox: Worth it here — profiles sit in the range where enriched air meaningfully extends no-stop time (with the training to use it).
