Playa del Carmen Bull Shark Dive

Each winter, female bull sharks — many visibly pregnant — gather over the sand flats off Playa del Carmen, and a dive industry has grown around kneeling quietly at 22 m while they patrol past. On a good December morning a line of divers may count a dozen animals moving in slow, heavy circles through the green-blue water. Some operators use bait to hold the sharks close, a practice that remains genuinely controversial in town; observation-style dives without feeding show calmer behavior and are the more defensible choice. Encounters are probable in season, never promised.
