Sha'ab Rumi South Plateau

The South Plateau of Sha'ab Rumi is Sudanese diving distilled: a sand-and-coral shelf pushed out into clear oceanic water where grey reef sharks gather in numbers that recall photographs from the 1970s. Divers settle low along the plateau's rim while the sharks make their circuits - twenty, thirty, sometimes more - joined by snapper walls, barracuda, and in the cooler months hammerheads passing deeper down the drop. Bumphead parrotfish crunch across the coral at the plateau's inner edge, and the shallows on the swim home are a bright, easy decompression among anthias. Hans Hass filmed here, Cousteau built his village on the same reef's west side, and the plateau still shows why this reef drew them: density without apparatus, sharks on their own terms.
