Karlsruhe is Scapa's teaching wreck and none the worse for it. Lying in the mid-twenties and heavily worked by past salvage, she has opened up into a readable cross-section of a WWI light cruiser: bow guns still recognizable, capstans and armored control tower among the debris, deck planking traces, and machinery spaces yawning where plating has gone. The extra light at this depth lets the marine growth show its colors — plumose anemones, sponges and shoals of juvenile fish — and gives photographers their best ambient conditions of the fleet. An ideal shakedown before the battleships.
