Leru Cut is a corridor of blue light: a fissure barely wider than a diver's wingspan that runs from the reef face deep into the island, its floor pale sand, its ceiling flickering between rock and open jungle sky. Fingers of sunlight drop through the gaps and swing across the walls as clouds pass, and the classic photograph — a silhouetted diver in the beam — makes itself. At the inner end you can surface beneath the trees, in silence, before turning back toward the sea. Fish life is incidental; the dive is architecture and light, timed for midday when the beams stand vertical.
Le moment pour lequel vous venez: Midday light shafts in the canyon; surfacing inside the island; walls sculpted like a cathedral aisle.
Topographie: A narrow slot canyon cut deep into the limestone of Leru Island, sand-floored, open to the sky in sections
Entrée: Russell Islands site reached by liveaboard or Munda-area charters; enter the slot from the reef wall.
À savoir avant de plonger
Dangers: Confined space with intermittent overhead; surge pushes through the slot when swell wraps the island.
Conservation: The cut's sand floor stirs easily and its walls are living rock — single file, fins slow, nothing touched.
