Every winter, Australian giant cuttlefish converge on a few kilometers of unremarkable-looking rock outside Whyalla in numbers found nowhere else on earth, tens of thousands of animals in water barely deep enough to kneel in. Males strobe color down their flanks to intimidate rivals, small sneakers dress as females to slip past the bouncers, and mating and egg-laying carry on regardless of the wetsuited audience. The water is cold enough to hurt and the visibility is often modest, and none of it matters: this is one of the great animal-behavior spectacles available to a snorkeler anywhere.
Momen yang Anda nantikan: Massed giant cuttlefish courtship, color displays at arm's length, snorkel-accessible depth
Topografi: Low rocky reef and seagrass in the upper Spencer Gulf shallows
Entri: Walk in over rocky shallows near Stony Point and Point Lowly outside Whyalla during the winter aggregation; thick exposure protection is not optional.
