Sherwood Forest

Sherwood Forest takes its name literally: stands of green tree coral rise off the deep ledge like a plantation, sheltering sweepers and juvenile fish in their branches. It is a quieter, moodier dive than the manta circuit — the pleasure is the habitat itself, worked slowly with a torch: leaf fish and scorpionfish in the coral trees, nudibranchs on the rubble, morays and lobster under the shelf. The deep sand alongside stays worth watching; smalleye and marbled rays commute past, and mantas appear often enough to keep heads on swivels. Depth caps the visit at half an hour of concentration.
