Clan MacWilliam

Vavaʻu's harbor keeps a proper shipwreck within sight of the café docks: the Clan MacWilliam, a British steamer that caught fire and sank at anchor in 1927. She sits upright in the still water of one of the Pacific's most protected harbors, which has preserved her shape — masts, holds, and deck machinery readable under a fur of sponges and black coral bushes. Lionfish and squirrelfish hold the shadowed spaces, and visibility swings with harbor plankton rather than weather. For a destination where diving plays second fiddle to whales, she is a genuinely satisfying wreck dive, calm enough to be many visitors' first at depth.
