Great Northern Wreck
Off Stone Town lies Zanzibar's accessible piece of maritime history: the Great Northern, a British cable-laying ship wrecked at the start of the twentieth century, now a low, broken sprawl of ribs, plates, boilers, and chain settling into the sand. At barely more than ten meters, it works for every certification level and long bottom times, and the structure has become a magnet in otherwise plain surroundings — lionfish and morays in the machinery, snapper and sweepers schooling through the frames, octopus and nudibranchs for the patient. Visibility is harbor-honest rather than oceanic. History and ease, not drama, are the draw.
